Independent Contractor

Aston builds intelligent trailer brake controllers. I am the senior firmware engineer in Canada, leading a four-person team and reporting to the technical director in Australia. I own the architecture, scope work from product requirements, review PRs, interview candidates, and coordinate wireless certification for every product. Firmware is sync/async Rust with generated ESP-IDF C bindings. The technical work is written up in TowPilot & Delta.

I pushed the team onto Confluence and Jira so requirements, defects, and project status are written down and traceable. New features start as a discussion with the electrical, app and product/executive teams, and I give the implementation guidance for both firmware and the app’s native code. I define the firmware’s peripheral requirements and review IC selections with the electrical team, and work with the Australian team on larger systems projects.
